Long Weekend of April
The 1st of April every year is not only April-fools-day it is also a public holiday in Cyprus. Banks, schools, business and governmental authorities are closed for business on this day. Cypriots remember the first day and the start of the liberation war against the British rule that then controlled and colonised the island of Cyprus.
The liberation war lasted 4 years and costed the lives of several Cypriots who took to the mountains and carried on guerrilla war fair. However at the end of it, a de facto government was but in place headed by the leader of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Makarios III to bring about the formation of the Republic of Cyprus.
The treaty establishing the Republic of Cyprus is another big event on Cyprus’s calendar and the same will be considered accordingly.
The passed these days were marked with friends and family and the celebration of birthdays, my own and a couple of my friends, however this year it is quite different since a dear friend passed away.
